Innovation Spotlight: Using AI to Support Surgeons - Featuring Robert Hurry

Medistim is exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) could help surgeons see more, understand more – and save more lives.

This work is in the early research and development phase and is not yet commercially available. By sharing our progress now, we hope to give a glimpse into how we are looking ahead to the future of surgical innovation.

Medistim ASA is a Norwegian, world-leading medtech company specializing in intraoperative blood flow measurement and ultrasound imaging. Our solutions provide surgeons with precise, real-time information – when every second counts.

Now, we are about to take the technology a step further. With AI, we aim to interpret ultrasound images and recognize patterns in blood flow curves during surgery, for example in heart bypass operations. “As an innovative medtech company, it’s crucial that we lead the way in the use of AI,” says Robert Hurry, Tech Lead at Medistim.

Robert moved from South Africa to Norway five years ago, mastering both the Norwegian language and cross-country skiing in record time. He is passionate about using technology that can make a difference: “AI can give surgeons an extra layer of confidence. It’s about detecting what the human eye might miss, so patients receive the best possible treatment.”

The goal is for AI to provide additional decision support during operations. While this technology is still in the early stages, Robert sees huge potential:

“The possibilities are enormous, both for medical research and for patients.”
